Question Can a flash drive get a virus when the PC it is attached to is attacked?

I have a windows 10 laptop and do most of my file keeping on a USB 128GB flash drive for back up and security. I got a notice of a firewall attack today. Putting aside the question of 'was the notice real or a ploy to get me to let in an attack', could such an attack also damage the files on my flash drive? If yes, does anyone make an antivirus product designed to protect a flash drive from an attack through a breached laptop? If yes, is it effective?

Something specific to protect a flash drive? Only something with a physical 'read only' switch. Even then, maybe not.
