Question can a virus cause a usb drive to go suddenly slow?

I have a WD Elements 4tb usb drive only 1 year old, that while transferring a file suddenly went extremely slow, there are no odd sounds from it. nearly 2 tb of files took 3 months to transfur out to another drive at speeds around 7 to 14 kb/s. is there anything i can do to fix this drive?

A virus usually doesn't cause this type of issue.

Aside from tossing $100+ is there anything i can do?

use the task manager and see what going on with disk access cpu usage and you get all your info right there that can fix your problem.

I had a WD My Book , that died like that , I was lucky enough to get most of it backed up to the cloud.
