Hey guys, wondering if an i3 4160 or i3 4170 run FFXIV on high settings @1080p, with some things turned off. Other specs

PC
CPU: i3 4160
RAM: Ripjaw X 8gb
GPU: Sapphire 7950 Boost
HDD: 1tb
PSU: 650W

Thanks in advance guys; also would love to hear from members either on i3 or similar dual core cpus with HT, Thanks.

Certainly. There's a free benchmark if you want to try it:

Thanks for the reply guys, unfortunately. the system isn't built yet. I'm building it for a friend on a budget, this will be her first desktop ever and she is not a gamer, FFXIV is the only game she currently plans to play. I figured an i5 or i7 would be overkill for general tasks, and if ffxiv can run on the i3 fine then i would go with that for the time being. The one thing that concerns me is, i hear MMOs tend to use more CPU cores so I'm worried about if the i3 can handle highly populated zones properly; on the ffxiv forums I know some people with G3258 have fps dips when in highly populated areas so I'm wondering if the Hyperthreading on the i3 can help with that.

In the past i would of done an amd fx based build but with Zen CPUs using a different socket and the next line of APUs using a new socket, I didn't want to invest in a platform with very little to no upgrade path; since this will be her very first desktop, I wanted to build something she can upgrade later in the future if she decides to play new games and I hear broadwell CPU is supposed to also use socket 1150.

Right now I'm looking at the i3 4170, which is only $5 more then the i3 4160 here in Canada.

Thanks so much for the replies guys, think i will most likely get the 4170 since there is only a $5 difference between it and the 4160 here. Out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, when you say "those are the ideal cpus for mmorpg", what exactly do you mean, or rather which feature makes them ideal? Thanks again. have a great day.

All of the MMORPGs are poorly optimized for multicore CPUs. So basically you just want a fast CPU. The i3 can hyperthread so you will basically have a quadcore when needed. You will get the same results with i3 as a Haswell E due to poor optimization. There are lots of promises being made for DX12 to allow better multithreading, but I've heard big promises for Direct X before, so I wouldn't hold my breath. Besides, DX12 doesn't help all the games that already exist.

tl;dr: the i3 is the sweet spot for MMORPGs
