Can I add a discrete graphics card to a core processor W/ integrated graphics.

I have a core i3 3220 with a integrated Intel HD 2500 graphics. I was thinking of buying a discrete graphics card as 2500 is terrible for gaming. So, can I disable the HD 2500 and get a new graphics to install?

Update: It is a desktop.

Yep, when you put a discrete card in and hook your monitors to it, the integrated will be switched off, will work just fine

If this is a desktop, almost certainly.
If it is a laptop, no.
