I have a bt box on my wall which is fibre optic and i think it is the modem as it is plugged streight into the red ethernet port on my existing router. The modem has 2 ports on it and i would like to know if i could use the other port and a long ethernet cable to set up a 2nd router unsatairs. If so what router would you suggest?

Thanks,

Ps. I am not very knowledgeable about routers and modems.

Fibre optic systems don't have a modem; they have an Optical Network Termination (which is pretty much the same thing but with FIBRE).

I'm not familiar with BT's gear, but if it's set up anything like Chorus's here in NZ, no. The extra ports would be for if you wanted to have multiple ISPs in the same building, or possibly if an ISP wanted to have IP TV and internet separate.

You can, however, simply connect a LAN port on the second router to a LAN port on your main router, and disable DHCP on the second router. This will give you two wireless access points on the same network.
