Okay, so I just installed a new motherboard, with the same hard drive. My dad told me I can burn a disk with Windows 7 and install it on my new motherboard and use my old product key. But my product key was preinstalled on my system. Is this a LEGAL, way? Or is my dad wrong?

Solution
if you changed to a different motherboard you do indeed have to reinstall windows.download the iso from my link and use imgburn to burn it to a dvd.make sure you use the iso thats appropriate for your key.install windows and use your key to activate.if you have any problem with activation you can do it over the phone with microsoft.

and how to activate over the phone.

This sound so hard to do :/ especially if I have to do something IN the registry. Notify Microsoft?

windows must be reinstalled to work on the new motherboard or it wont work. Different motherboards use different drivers because they use different hardware. and because they want you money. but if you call microsoft they can register it for you if the guy is feeing nice that day. its not that hard just update drivers i believe but i could be mistaken.

I hope that clarifies it 😀

once youve burnt the install disk start your computer and go to the boot menu.set it to boot from cd/dvd,insert your dvd and press enter.the install screen will come up.when it does select custom install.this will erase all data on the drive so back up your files first.as for these isos being the latest i dont quite understand the question.these are the windows 7 official isos and are safe to use and they work.

you could try the other install option but i would recommend a clean install as there is less chance of problems later.if you dont choose to format the drive when installing it will keep your files in a folder called windows old.

So what exactly is the consequences of not formatting it?

you might not have any problems or little glitches.if you have anything you need to save on that drive and cant back it up any other way try the install that saves your files.the worst thing that can happen is you have to do a clean install at a later date.you will, however have to reinstall your programs.let us know how it goes.

Alright. Do you know how to back up files? Never done it before :3. After custom installing, where would my back upped files be so I can copy them back?

your files will show up in a folder called "windows old". now that youve changed your board you wont be able to back up the files on your current machine.the windows old folder will save your files unless you choose to format when installing windows.note that choosing a clean install does not mean you are choosing to format the hdd so you should be all right.

Alright well now I gotta burn the disk this week

there are varying opinions on this.technically your oem licence is tied to your original hardware, but this is where the phone activation comes in.try the regular activation first, chances are it will work.if it doesnt use the phone method.the phone method is usually automated but sometimes you will have to explain your situation to a microsoft employee.just tell them your motherboard crapped and you installed a new one.ive never, nor has anybody i know, ever had a problem doing this.cheers.

Okay, so I've downloaded the ISO file. Do I drag to desktop and extract it? I got a folder with some contents in it. I'm doing it correct, right?

use a program called imgburn to burn the iso to a dvd.here is the link..

After 2 hours of bonding with my dad, finally installed motherboard and Windows 7! Best part, I got to use my OEM product key with no problems. I guess I lucked out 😛. But pretty pissed at him, he broke my NEW ASUS GRYPHON Z87's Ram lock... And he broke my wifi wireless adapter too! But can't blame him, he did pay for the motherboard 😛 This night is very tiring. Thanks for all your help man. Keep helping people, your making their lives better.
