I have a, MSI GTX 770 TWIN FROZR, graphics card laying around. Would it be possible to hook up an external power supply and my graphics card and connect it to my old desktop pc to improve it. I don't know much about this topic so sorry if I sound dumb. Also would I need a new cpu too because my one isn't that good? Would the fact that the pc is old bottle neck the performance too much?

Solution
It's hard to suggest or help without knowing what you have and what your budget is.

A GTX 770 TWIN FROZR is a pretty power-hungry card @ up to 230W so you would need a 500W supply.

What are your specs

CPU
Motherboard
RAM
Hard Drive
Case Size " Full Tower, Mid Tower, Desktop, Slim" A card that size will only fit in a Full or Mid-sized Tower.

What "Old" PC are you working with and why would you consider attempting an External over sticking it in the case? Is it a small form factor with a tiny power supply?
Now that I think of it would it be cheaper to buy a whole new power supply that can power the whole pc and the new gpu inside the case or would it be cheaper to buy a smaller gpu (maybe 300 W) and use it to power only the gpu and hook it up externally? I am aware that it would reduce the performance of the gpu. Sorry for stupid questions.

Ok so I am trying to get better performance for as cheap as possible.
Inside the old desktop I have:
Motherboard: MSI MS-7778 (Jasmine)
CPU: AMD A10 5700 APU
RAM: 8GB
Graphics: Eyefinity Radeon HD 7570 and it says it has integrated graphics too
Case: MINI Tower (the GTX 770 fits inside because I have already tried)
PSU: 300W (ATX)

I can either buy a new PSU and install the GPU inside the case OR would it be possible to use one of them devices that allow use to hook it up externally and it is powered by a power cable that comes with it so it wouldnt need a new power supply. Which method would be cheaper or even possible. Thank you for your help.

HP Pavilion 500 series? If so your CPU is maxed out and rather weak but at least it uses a standard ATX PSU. A GPU upgrade isn't going to help much considering how much that Llano is going to hold you back. If you want a cheap upgrade look for a I7 3XXX, i7 4XXX. i3 6XXX used a combo, you can find those around $125 to $150 for a CPU/Motherboard and RAM.

Also, since I’m pretty much replacing everything wouldn’t it be better to build a whole new pc from used parts?

It all depends on what you're looking at playing. If you're aiming at highly demanding more current games then you're going to want more current hardware. If your looking at Fortnite, LOL and games that are less stressful then an early i7 and a 770 would be very good.
