Question Can I overclock my 17-8700k to 5.0ghz,

I'm wanting to OC my cpu to 5.0ghz for Monster hunter wilds however I'm not sure it's possible so I would love any advice on this. I'll go ahead and list some of my specs.

-CPU I7-8700k
-Water cooled DEEPCOOL CAPTAIN 240EX 240mm Radiator CPU Liquid Cooler w/ Copper Cold Plate [+30]
-Motherboard: CyberpowerPC Z370 SLI Xtreme ATX w/ RGB, 802.11ac WiFi, USB 3.1, 2 PCIe x16, 4 PCIe x1, 6 SATA3, 2 M.2 SATA/PCIe [Intel Optane Ready]
-POWERSUPPLY: 1,000 Watts - Standard 80 Plus Gold Power Supply [+8]

I'm wanting to overclock it without changing any type of voltage or other settings but if that's not possible then olease let me know

Wanting to overclock is not the same as needing to overclock.

Unless there is some specific measurable requirement for more performance just leave well enough alone.

In other words: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

If there is some specific problem then post accordingly.

I guess it would be better to say yes I need to OC mainly because I have a 3070 possibly creating a bottleneck and I can't upgrade my current cpu without replacing the Mobo completely. Not to mention Unreal Engine 5 games are destroying my soul at the moment

If the RTX 3070 is creating the bottleneck, making your CPU faster won't fix that. If you are GPU bound, then you can only increase performance by reducing settings.

Looks like default all core boost is 4.3Ghz, getting that 700Mhz higher is asking a lot of an off the shelf AIO. You can certainly get it closer, but you will have to increase core voltage and monitor temperatures under load.

So far I've been able to overclock it to around 4.6ghz and keep it stable but im thinking 5ghz might be the sweet spot to hit a stable 60fps in most new games. I have noticed a increase in frames so maybe if I up the voltage to 1.35v then maybe 5ghz could he achieved but im not sure

1.35 is relatively safe, but basically the maximum recommended for a daily overclock. The question is if your CPU cooler can handle it under a load. You really don't want to pushing it past 90C under a benchmark, but under 80C while gaming would be much better.

From what research I've done these older chips can handle high heat but I'll have to do more testing when I get home for sure. Any tips on a good benchmark I should use or should I just test it with a long gaming session?

Examples would be Space marines 2, The first descendant, Cyberpunk2077 and Monster hunter wilds. Usually if it's Unreal Engine 5 then I'm going to run into annoying CPU issues

I have found Cinebench R23 to be a good CPU test. If it can handle a few passes of that, it is generally stable enough for gaming. But every game is a little different in how it stresses CPUs.

True stability would be running something like AIDA64, making sure the memory and GPU all hitting the CPU at once isn't a problem.

UE5 does this to more powerful CPU's too. It's a hog!

1440p and game performance issues are likely due to a GPU limitation, not CPU. Especially with regards to how little vram you have.

I was able to do 5.1Ghz all core with no avx offset, but i had to do a lot of work. I used the Rockitcool kit to Delidding my 8700k and used their copper IHS with liquid metal.

I followed this video when i overclocked my CPU, but i was using an Asus board and its only a guide, i still had to play with the settings he adjusted as my CPU was not stable at his settings.

Watch the video and see what setting you would have to change in order to overclock the CPU
