Windows software is using most of the hard drive capacity and this is only going to get worse as Microsoft churns out even more updates. Is Marshmallow a possible option?

Solution

Yes, but it is still only a 32GB drive.

Does it have a SD or microSD card slot? I use a 64GB microSD card in little Asus transformer for anything non-OS related.

What size is the hard drive?
What are the laptop specs?

Android OS on a windows based laptop is a tough enterprise.

Betting it's this one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Inspiron-11-6-inch-Laptop-Intel-Celeron-2GB-Ram-32GB-eMMC-Flash-Memory-Bali-Blue/179776450?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=4194&adid=22222222227049651773&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=147533326240&wl4=pla-261436444279&wl5=9018803&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=113510266&wl11=online&wl12=179776450&wl13=&veh=sem

That would make the drive a 32GB emmc.
2GB RAM
Celeron n3050 CPU

Yes, you're probably correct.
Those systems are useful only as a web browser or email device.I have a similar Asus Transformer.

And highly unlikely you can get Android running on that thing.

Yes, the Dell notebook does have 32gb memory and 2Gb ram.
If my original idea is not really feasible, is it possible to replace Win 10 with Linux software?

You can get Linux-based X86-compatible Android distros with either Remix OS ( http://www.jide.com/remixos-for-pc ), or the earlier project, Android-X86 ( http://www.android-x86.org/ ). Remix specifically states it will run with 2GB RAM, and 8GB of disk space. Both distros have Marshmallow (6) versions available now, and Android-X86 is working on Nougat in beta now. Worth a try ;-}
