Hi everyone,

I am wondering if it is possible to retrieve my Product key for windows 7 from my HDD.

My power supply died on my PC so I took the rather drastic step of building a new machine. My first effort and pleased to say with help from this forum it is all working.

I have used the hard Drive from my old PC which has windows 7 on it. Obviously it will not boot.

Is it possible to find my activation key on the HDD, so I don´t have to purchase a new key for the fresh install.

I do not have any windows product details on the old PC or any disks.

I have read through the forums but can`t find the solution for my exact problem I have.

Many thanks in advance.

Was Windows 7 pre-installed at the factory on your old PC?

If it was, you cannot use that Windows installation on a different PC. It's illegal to do so.

When your old PC died, that pre-installed copy of Windows died with it. That's in the licence agreement.

Thanks for your reply Philip. New operating system bought. Also discovered the old OS was only 32bit which is no good for my new build anyway.

Thanks for the help.
