I'm just about to build a new computer with a 295x2 but I want to be able to drop a second one in there later this year. Will a Z97-A do it or do I have to get something like a Z97-WS?

If I need to pick a different board does anyone have any suggestions? I really don't know anything about motherboards.

The official page of the Z97-A motherboard manufacturer tells it is AMD Quad-GPU compatible. In other words, it is okay to put another video graphics card latter. Just make sure your power supply will be able to support both VGA.
