Yes, it is possible to upgrade a laptop CPU, depending on the socket. If your mom's laptop is upgradeable, you may be able to upgrade to an i3 first generation. But that depends on the socket and the BIOS support as well as the cooling capability of the laptop. You would be better off installing a solid state drive, which will give her better overall performance.

So basically, what you're saying is that some laptop CPU's can be upgraded and some cannot.

Which means nothing because we do not know the details if the particular laptop in question.

It's okay I'll just upgrade my mom's hard drive to an ssd

It only comes in G1 which isn't soldered. The issue comes down to heat and bios support like other laptop cpu upgrades. Even with the same tdp, it will create more heat. You can't find the cpu support list and contacting them is usually fruitless. You can look at other cpus offered by the same model to get an idea if it would work.

Both original cpu and 560m use the K0 stepping, bios should support just fine. And both chips are in the same TDP limit, the i5 will have more heat but a 35W cooler on most laptops will be fine, if not a louder fan being spun up more often. If you were to put in a 45W chip in a 35W design, then you exceed the cooling capacity.

How do I know what the cooling capacity is on the laptop? Also, how much of an improvement is the processor? I have a link here, but I don't know what most of these things are and want to know if it is even worth the upgrade. Thanks for the response <3

Actually, it's not the laptop that's important here, it's the chipset, and I gave you that

You still have not listed the laptop brand and model. The laptop should have 35W TDP already, it uses a chip with a theoretical 35W max output. The increase will probably be about 50% better due to a higher base clock, and the 3.2 GHz boost mode and adding the HT for 4 threads over the 2.1 GHz and 2 threads you have. Also the built in graphics will be better on the 560m, due to a higher clock but it will not be mind blowing. Well worth $15 a little thermal paste and some time for assembly . Maybe see if a pc shop can install it for you for a modest fee if you are not comfortable doing it yourself. An SSD will make it feel a lot more responsive. I went from an i3 350m to a i5 560m and added a SSD to a Lenovo laptop at work and also swapped a dell latitude 6410. Night and day difference. I haven't gamed on them though.

It's also 'the laptop', re: cooling, BIOS, etc, etc.

What I was commenting on was the two orig replies:
"You can, if..."
"You can't, unless..."

No matter, though. As you've decided, a new SSD is probably a far better upgrade.
And I agree.

After some further research, I have actually found a compatible i7 640m processor that has the same socket, tdp, stepping, everything. I am changing my decision to go from a neww ssd to this processor. However, I may also add a new ssd as well, depending on the budget. I thank you all for helping me for helping me finding compatible processors, my decision, and learn some things about this as well. <3 My mom is gonna amazed at how fast her laptop runs now xD

I've upgraded several cpu's in laptops that are refurb laptops that I sell from time to time. As long I do some research online and find that other people have upgraded successfully without issues from going from one processor to another generally you will be just fine. Just make sure you have the most up to date bios. Also the first gen i'3s i'5s range from $5-15. So really you don't have very much to lose even if it doesn't work. the worst that can happen would be that it doesn't boot with the new processor or you just get a CPU NOT SUPPORTED message on your screen when you try to boot it up. It won't damage or fry anything as long as you know how to change your laptops processor.

I would recommend http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i5-520M-2-4GHz-CPU-Processor-P-N-SLBNB-Tested-/302038627451?hash=item4652e7b47b:g:nscAAOSw9NdXq4ef

Please don't fall for the rehashed BS on this site.

Thank you for your reply, sir. Judging from the video you sent me, I think that the i7 I will purchase should work just as fine (obviously the performancewill be WAY better than the i5 though). Hey, even by the slim chance it doesn't wok, I'll just resell it and get my $60 back. Thanks again.

The I7-640m also has two core four thread and only gives you an extra meg of cache and 133 mhz base 266 mhz in turbo over the I5 I recommended for $15, but it loses 33 MHz on the integrated graphics not that it is much of a powerhouse, even a geforce 9400m performs better but laptops don't have much in graphics upgrades.

The p6200 has 667 MHz graphics, 640m 733 MHz, and the 560m 766 MHz. All 3 use a 500 MHz stock clock, and overclock when thermals permit. Either I5 or I7 is huge over the P6200 and I3, but the value is definitely with the I5, allows more money for that SSD

One other upgrade, see if the 4GB ram is a single stick and 800 mhz pc3-6400 or 1066 mhz pc3-8500, max the laptop can hold is 8GB (2x 4GB 1066)
