Hi all,
I purchased an XPS 700 in 2006. A very cheap deal through my employer.
Last year, after a good battle with DELL, they agreed to upgrade my MB for free. So now the system runs with a XPS 720 MB. The BIOS is currently A06. So far so good.
Rather than throw the towel in and build my own. I decided to upgrade. I found the following to be a cheap and sensible way of doing this.
Graphics is AMD Radeon HD 6950 2GB.
Upgraded the RAM to 3GB.
My OS remains XP Pro 32-bit. I intend to replace this with the 64-bit or even Windows 7.
I want to replace the current Intel Core 2 6400 @ 2.13GHz. I have done some research into this and found that I can go to the maximum of an Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 @ 2.93 GHz Quad-Core. This apparently runs stable @ 3.45GHZ.
I don't think this upgrade to be a bad move. I would rather increase this system to its near max. than just start with a new build. I have every intension of building my next gaming PC but I would like to get a few more year out of this system.
Because of the increase with the CPU, I would also like to change the original processor airflow shroud with a H2C water cooling unit. Is this just a case of removing one and replacing it with the other?
My questions are. Is my MB capable of running this CPU.
And, is it just a case of swapping the airflow unit for a liquid cooling unit.
Thanks for any advice you care to share with me.
