For reference I have two workstations, z230 & z640.

I recently bought an amd cpu + b450m am4 mobo. It will be a few weeks before I buy a case, until then I was hoping to install the mobo in the z230 case.

Iv read that the mobo of the z230 is an atx, so I'm assuming the case *should* support matx motherboards... With a little tweaking.

Has this been done before?

The problem might be that the case does not have the proper stand-offs for your motherboard. HP uses lots of proprietary things.
