For reference I have two workstations, z230 & z640.

I recently bought an amd cpu + b450m am4 mobo. It will be a few weeks before I buy a case, until then I was hoping to install the mobo in the z230 case.

Iv read that the mobo of the z230 is an atx, so I'm assuming the case *should* support matx motherboards... With a little tweaking.

Has this been done before?

The problem might be that the case does not have the proper stand-offs for your motherboard. HP uses lots of proprietary things.

Ahh dang it.
It shouldn't be a big deal, but I wouldn't put a new build into the small form factor version of the z230. However, I have done a few HP mid tower types and its not as bad as you think. On one of those versions, they had pin headers on the board that connected to a cable that plugged into an IDC connector on the motherboard. Others, I just soldered on new leads for the switches and LEDs.

What I ended up doing is taking a couple of sets of header wires frm scrapped front panel leads and solder then together and took a multi meter and found my pins to jumper from the front board to the new motherboard. The usb ports were on standard header plugs so no modification was needed.
