I am currently trying to move my wireless router to the other end of my house for better reception where the wireless devices are being used. My internet hookup is near my desktop which uses a wired connection. Will the following setup work?

Main Connection --> Modem --> Ethernet switch or repurposed old wireless router --> 1 line to wireless router and one to desktop PC

No it will not work. Your ISP only gives you 1 IP Address unless you have like Business Connection where they often give you multiple IP's then yes it would work if you counfigured it right but for any Home Internet you have 1 dynamic IP and thats it. Pretty much your PC and Router will fight for the 1 IP address the modem gives out.

I think this is the issue I am having with the wifi extender I bought, which is a piece of junk. Is there an easy solution other than running long ethernet cord across the house and then back from the router?

I have cable internet...can the modem be connected to any incomming coax cable or does it have to be the specific one they set it up on during installation?

First, WiFi Extenders can be tough to configure sometimes. I've had some very upsetting weekends trying to get some of them to get up and go. With a WiFi Extender, make sure all of the settings match the router (security must be exact match, SSID, password, etc).

As for the "can the modem be connected to any incoming coax cable", I find more often than not the answer is "YES". If they put a little line conditioner on the end of the cable, move that with it too, otherwise, give it a try. You aren't going to hurt anything by trying. Do a speed test before you disconnect it (speedtest.net) to check performance. Then, when you hook it up on the different coax line and get it working, so another speed test to make sure you are getting the same performance. I've never had an issue with it.

Good luck.
