The new motherboard i get has one "m.2" slot between the pci-e x16 lanes.

The sockets look almost the same and "m.2" occupies one of my six SATA connectors (internally), so i guess it's ment for addon storage. Would like to use it, but i dont really need the 10GBit and maybe this slot/socket is backwards compatible or there is an adapter available of some sort.

Thanks.

Just an update on this, there are several <$10 adapters now on Amazon and Ebay that do this. I had a bunch of old 850 Evo mSATA 250gb drives that I plugged into various M.2 slots on my desktop rigs. Laptops probably won't be able to fit, but desktop boards should be no problem as their M.2 slots are normally wired for both native SATA and NVMe modes.
