I want to try and build my own PC. Can I use my old 2008 HP Pavillion case? My system crashed...the motherboard is bad according to the repair tech. He said not to sink another penny into it. I am interested in learning how to build my own system and was hoping I could use the case. Any ideas out there?

The yellow and black wires which look like they are connected to the light on the case are connected to the HDD LED pins, the red and black wires which run to the on/off black knob are connected to the on/off pins, and the blue and black wires which are connected to a white/clear plastic like knob with a P next to it are connected to the Power LED pins...although the new MB has 3 pins, but the case only has 2 wires. Nothing is connected to the speaker pins.

There is another set of wires that come from the card reader? I have it connected to the serial port connector. There is another set of wires that come from what looks to be like a port for a diskete bay? Its empty...but I connected it to the serial port connector also. I am not sure if this is where they go...but the computer no longer turns on when I plug it in...only when I press the on/off button.

Well actually it does not turn off when I press the on/off button...I have to unplug it...but I could not turn it off that way before either....so perhaps I had an issue with the system that i was just ignoring? :fou: I had to power down or unplug the computer.

You know...I have to just say having a laptop is awesome! I am so mobile!

Do the power and HDD LEDs work?

Also, I suggest you remove the card reader from the serial port. Most of those readers are USB, I know of none that use serial ports (a.k.a. comm ports).

Yes, hook up your monitor, keyboard, and mouse and see if your system powers up to your BIOS setup.

Typically, when you power down with the power button (force a shutdown), you have to hold the button down for 3-5 seconds. Just FYI and future reference.

OMG...OMG!!!!Holy Shoot my 11 year old says! It's working...monitors on, mouse is working...It is now asking if I want to recover my computer to the factory condition...HELP! Should I recover it?

Where is my support crew!!! You all left me! 😛

Sorry...I did not completely read your message...Too excited...LOL! My son now thinks that I am coolest!

I don't actually have the disks...Just the recovery partition right now. Can I try that without messing anything up?

No windows....but the Recovery is complete! It says that I will need to perform some additional important steps after restarting:

~Update security files from microsoft and HP
~and stuff I don't care about...LOL
