I want to try and build my own PC. Can I use my old 2008 HP Pavillion case? My system crashed...the motherboard is bad according to the repair tech. He said not to sink another penny into it. I am interested in learning how to build my own system and was hoping I could use the case. Any ideas out there?

I bought the RAM that you said to get back on page one of this thread. Same color yes...Blue and red ripjaw or somthing.

A Black screen came up...DOS looking and now its the windows screen that says please wait while windows sets up your computer.

hope so bro.
I like the look, kinda like thor's hammer or something huh.?
Sort of, yep. It is a Marvel logo I liked, so I "borrowed" it for now. My daughter worked on Transformers 3 this last summer, and my wife was an extra in it as well, so I am looking for a good avatar to use from that. In fact, if you saw the Super Bowl on Sunday and saw the Transformers trailer, my wife was in the opening scene of the trailer. It was pretty dang HOOAH!!!

Like anywhere...It has its good and bad points...but I do love living here. I lived in Hawaii for 7 years...that was pretty awesome too...Thought I would never get over having to move...but life moves on.

ETA I try not to make it to LA either... :pt1cable: I like staying in my little Southbay...Have to avoid the 405 at all costs!

Yes...It's pretty expensive...but hey...you don't have to buy winter clothes! Or pay heating bills!

Have to go get dinner going...Thanks again for all your help with my project!

Nope....right smack in the middle of the country. However, I get to CA often and my daughter is likely to intern there or NYC this summer.

Good morning COL...I thought with the Transformer thing that you were here. Sounds like an exciting time in your daughter's life. Is she studying film?

Also...I have another question for you about my system...The set of wires that are coming from the front of the case...it looks like they are coming from the memory card reader (or whatever you call the camera card reader thing 😛 ). I am not sure where to connect it on the new MB. The old MB had two extra connectors labeled USB 3 and USB 4 with a single line of 4 pins for this and another set of wires that went to the diskette port (which is empty). Any thoughts?

I spent last night reading about BIOS...it was scintillating! LOL!

The memory card reader is a USB device. Does that connector have 2 rows of pins or a single row?

Does your case have a floppy drive? If so, is it connected?

Yep, daughter is a film and history major (and a genuinely good kid). Wife is a writer/journalist/screenwriter. I am a glorified geek in a uniform. The "fun" never stops!

BTW, reading about BIOS is a sure way to pass out. Always do so sitting or lying down.....

LOL...my thoughts exactly RE the BIOS.

The wired connector coming from the computer (not sure what to call this?) has one row of holes for the pins. The new MB does not have a place for it other than the Serial Port Connector which has 2 rows of pins...one with 4 pins and the other with 5 pins.

The floppy drive (old style diskettes right?) is empty, but does have a set of wires coming from it (has 5 pin holes). I had these both connected to the serial port connector on the board because this was the only place to put them. But you said yesterday that I should disconnect them...so I was wondering what I should do with them? Lot of thems in my sentence...:)

ETA Anxiously awaiting the delivery of my new Windows 7 OEM!

Look at the colors of the wires for the memory card reader and the other one. Likely, they have a red, green, black, and white wires, true?

The other wire is likely your front panel USB ports and has the same color wires with an additional ground wire (black or dark gray).

Both of those go to a USB header. If the colors match, like I suspect, then you plug onto a USB header with the black wires on the 7 and 8 pins (both can be side by side on the same header on the mobo with the 5-pin connector also connecting to the 10 pin.

Confused yet?
