Solution
I have done it with crucial dimms. I started with 1 8gb stick then a few months later picked up another one, then a few months later added a 2x4 kit to get me to 24gb total. I had no problems because i chose the same brand with the same speed and the same latency. You appear to be doing the same so in my opinion, you should be good to go.
Mixing sticks can be problematic, especially different sizes. If I were you I'd sell off the old ram and buy a new ram kit. Generally it's good practice to buy the same exact ram in one package to avoid any problems.

Can you mix a set of two different sizes? Yes. But are they the same cas latency, timing and recommended voltage? Just increases the chances of the BSOD.

Hope this helps.
