WinMX is like Kazaa, but with a little less spyware.

Right now I'm using overnet and I have some questions. I'm new to this so it's kind of confusing. I'm d/ling a movie and sometimes I get 1.4-2.3k/b and other times 9-11. Why is it getting so low then other times high? Also right now I'm getting a whooping .3 wtf??? Its getting up to 1.1 then going all the way to 0 and the status says looking. Can someone tell me why its doing this? Thanks.

Because Overnet is inherently slow. It takes patience, but it has way more movies and games than Kazaa ever had, making the wait worth while. That's why I just queue up a lot of stuff, so that I always use my max bandwidth.

Because at any given time there are different numbers of people who are sharing the files you need. When you are getting a high transfer rate, that means there are more people sharing those particular file(s). This works conversely as well.

Thanks for the info. If the entertainment industry is getting killed by people downloading music/movies then why don't they go after the people that are downloading for kazaa, winmx, etc.?

I don't believe they are getting killed by it. They just like to bitch and moan. And it's really hard to prosecute an individual on Kazaa. And since Kazza is a peer-2-peer network I'm sure they are thinking...why bother.

Awhile back there was an article in TIME talking about the money loss. Its mostly with music though. So when I get the Looking status in overnet that means there isn't any sources of the file?

they arent being killed by any means

they are just bitching because they are losing 7% of the 100 billion dollars being made each year (on nothing substantial i might add. music is meant to be shared. not to create corporations on. sure artists have to eat but i wonder how many millions Avril Lavigne has now? 100 million? easy

So when I get the Looking status in overnet that means there isn't any sources of the file?

Basically, yes. I've learned to just leave edonkey on and not worry about it. Don't expect extremely fast downloads. Patience is the name of the game.

Crap the movie i'm downloading is suppose to be a "fake". Found a text document saying that the dl is fake. When your on a dial-up and the movie its 67 percent complete that just pisses you off.

Get Avi Preview and check first. Also, try to get all movies from Sharereactor.com since you won't get any fakes that way.

Actually, WinMX has no spyware. It's a little harder to figure out than Kazaa and eDonkey, but once you get it configured and locate some good OpenNap Servers, you can find anything on it, and you have a lot more control over things. Speeds vary depending on whether you find it on the OpenNap or the WinMX Peer network. Often, though you can dig up a nice T3 on the OpenNap and...... I haven't touched Kazaa or eDonkey since I figured out the OpenNap.

I use DC++. I find it is very powerful if you get into the right hubs. I have been able to find anything I have wanted and have never gotten a bad file off of it.

Just because I like AMD or Intel more at a time because of one product compared to another, does not make me a fan boy, it makes me a person who is able to make a decision for myself.

I use Direct Connect and DC++, can find just about everything! Kazaa sucks; I've never ever downloaded or installed it (I've never even seen a screenshot).

My problem is cd-keys. You can never get those games to play online, the keys don't seem to work. Ideas? (not that I going to do it:)

Some games work, others you should buy if you like them and want to play them online.

Most if not all games can still be played multiplayer on a LAN though.

Man, if it weren't for all the scary legal policies and crap I'd love to see a bittorrent forum here at Tom's.

A lot of sites have them, and you see the craziest stuff up for d/l (Pete & Pete, Reading Rainbow, 80s commericals, etc)

It's all good ^_^

is there anyway to speed up the downloads? ive been waiting for 6 weeks now for a movie. the fastest download speed ive seen is 8.0 and that was only for a few hrs.... then its back to "looking". before i chose a file, i make sure it has the highest "availability" rating... am i doing this right?

....the crows seemed to be calling him, thought caw....

What program r u using? If the person you're uploading from only has a 56K or is having hundreds of other people downloading off of them at the same time, their upload bandwidth is going to be quite small.

I've just got into BitTorrent and I defnitely prefer it too Kazaa and KazaaLite. Also if you only use it for porn, try Kaza.com, you'll have explicit pop-ups for the next 3 months, much to our amusment/embaressment when we recommended Kazaa to a customer.

Yes. Leave it on all the time, and wait. The problem with the program is that it makes you have too many channels open, so if you're only uploading at 10k, you'll have 5 ppl downloading from you at about 2k each, so if you're only receiving from a couple people like this, then it's spectacularely slow.

You trade off speed for reliability with Overnet.
