So im a bit confused with monitors and 4k, i was gonna go buy myself a 4k monitor but then i read somewhere that you have to check to see if your gpu can run 4k, i have a GeForce 940M and i went to the geforce website to see if my gpu can run 4k and apparently my gpu doesn't support 4k but then the thing is it said something about GAMING and 4K (like it doesn't support 4k gaming, but im not going to use my laptop for gaming) im probably gonna use it for movies and general use so i was wondering if i get a 4k moniter, can my gpu (Geforce 940M) play 4K content (not gaming) like movies and pictures in 4K or is it not even able to play those in 4K (can i use 4k for general use)?
OH AND i saw something about how some hdmi dont support 4k and you need to have hdmi 2.0(or something) in order to play 4k content?is that for the cable or the hdmi source in my laptop?like is there a special 2.0 hdmi port on laptops or somethin and if so how do i know if my laptop has that port? Thank you (sorry for the long question) :)

Solution
The 940m GPU supports 4k through hdmi 1.4a or displayport 1.2, but these features might be limited or disabled by your laptop manufacturer. So it really comes down to what your laptop manufacturer specifies the laptop is or isn't capable of.

hdmi 2 is simply put an updated version over the old hdmi standards. It uses the same hdmi port, but your hardware must have support for it.
Link your laptop, it probably does not have HDMI 2.0 capability.
You need to have an HDMI 2.0 cable as well as device to get 4k @ 60hz.
Regular HDMI can do 4k, but only at 30hz, so your mouse will feel like it is in soup, sloshy and slow.

It may have a display port which is capable of 4k no problems.

What makes you want to get a 4k tv for movies and such? 4k movies are extremely huge file wise and not very common on... download... sites. The scaling is a nightmare to work with unless its 50" plus. Netflix has SOME 4k content but it isn't all that great of a selection and depending on your bandwidth it drops to 1080 all the time.

will an hdmi to display port adapter work? like if my laptop doesn't have display port could i use an hdmi to display port adapter?

It wouldnt help any. HDMI 1.x can do 4k but at 30hz, an adapter isnt going to help you any, it's only as fast as it's slowest link.

but will the 60hz and 30hz difference be noticeable?

That seems to be a personal opinion. To me it's clear as day. My daughter saw me playing Smite on Xbox one which runs at 30fps. She asks why does it look so much better on PC. Because it runs at 60fps.
And I just got a new monitor to try 120Hz (it goes to 144 but my videocard doesnt handle that). After only 2 days I dread having to return it (dead pixels) and waiting to get a different one.

Give it a try, i think you should be able to set your currently display to 30fps and give it a try and see if its worth it. I'll take higher fps over looks anyday.

i actually did that just now and im surprised of how big of a deference it make holy crap i guess im just gonna have to stick to 1080p for a while until i up my graphics card so it supports display port 1.2

And that is the source of my current dissatisfaction with consoles. I got an xbox1 last year because all my friends moved onto it from 360. No one told me they dont actually play games. Its just a netflix/youtube box at this point.
The games I try to play are choppy and 30fps. Next gen my ass.
and now they announce upgraded versions of xbox1 and ps4 because they seemed to notice they released garbage the first time.
Hence I've been focusing on pc gaming and wanted to try the 120Hz. I really do dread not having it now...

damn 120hz would be so cool! but then would you feel the difference from 60hz to 120hz cause there is a massive difference from 30hz to 60hz

the difference form 30 to 60 hz is very noticeable, but from 60 to 120 it would be in general less noticeable. But this all boils down to personal preference, some people swear by higher refresh rates, some people don't even notice the difference between 60 hz or 144 hz.

60 to 120 I can feel a difference. Some posts I read people say they cant.
I like it. Going back to 60, I probably can because thats what I'm more familiar with.
Also note they say screen tearing is less detectable at higher frame rates. From my perspective I've used vsync since the beginning of time. I always had a pc that could handle it and I didnt like the frame tearing.
I disabled it 2 weeks ago to get a feel for it and to me I can see it clearly. I have a gsync monitor and an amd card so for now I don't know how good gsync/freesync looks. I assume I will like it since the screen tearing is obvious to me.
I would even see it on some xbox games.
