I plan on doing a clean install of XP upgrade version from a totally wiped HD etc... This is how I'm going to do it.. a little different from how I would do a regular 9X install. ( I got this from forums here.. it sounds good to me) Can someone tell me if this plan looks okay for this type of install? I'm not sure whether to use the NTFS or FAT32.. I have a 30gig HD so I was going to use FAT32, but if one of you more adept people think otherwise? Thanks and Happy Holidays

"This should work. This is for a clean install. Everything on hard drive will be erased. Boot up your computer and enter the bios. Make sure your floppy drive is the first boot device. Exit and save changes. Restart computer with WinMe start up disk in the floppy drive. At the A prompt type fdisk. Delete all exsisting partitions. Then set up a new logical DOS partition.(Use extended partition) Now format your hard drive. After your hard drive is formated reboot computer and enter the bios. Change the first boot device to CD ROM. Exit and save changes. Reboot computer with WinXP CD in the CD ROM. Windows setup will start. Eventually it will tell you that no existing version of Windows is present on your hard drive. Don't panic. You will be asked to insert your WinME CD. Do so. Set up will Continue and copy a few files from the WinME CD. After that it will ask for your WinXP CD and set up will continue. At this point you will be asked how you want to format the hard drive. NTFS or FAT32. Choose which ever you like. Set up will continue and in about 30 minutes you will have loaded XP on to your machine."

You can actually use the Windows XP CD to delete your partitions on your HD; you don't need to use FDISK. If you're not dual-booting Win9x or something, go with the NTFS file system.

So, for your situation, it'd be like:
"Boot your computer and enter the BIOS. Change your boot device order so that your CD drive is scanned first. Save and exit. Insert the Windows XP CD and boot from it. Go through the prompts, and when it asks what partition to install to, select all that you have, and delete them one by one. Then, when it's all deleted, then choose the unformatted one, and choose to do a full format NTFS. All the rest should be self explanatory. Expect about 1 hour to complete a clean install."

Here's a good article/FAQ from Anandtech:

Is that the same as doing a clean install off a clean HD, or is your way installing over my pre-existing OS - something i dont want to do?

It's a clean install. Whenever you do something involving formatting, it's gonna be a clean install.
