Can Windows 10 be installed with Core 2 Quad Q9650?

Having a problem trying to install windows 10 onto system with Asus P5B m/b and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650, says CPU not supported. Checked via Intel CPU software that says PAE, NX, SSE2 all supported, could be related to VT-x, but BIOS (2104 - latest) says Vanderpool (old Vt-x?) enabled.

Also, as an alternative, could windows 10 be installed via Oracle VirtualBox or something similar to workaround this problem?

You can install windows 10 in a VM no problem, I did that for months with the preview.

Right now, Microsoft is working thru some problems with CPU hardware. For example, a ton of G3258 CPU users cannot run windows 10 for some reason. I suggest waiting a few weeks before upgrading your system to windows 10.

No it's pretty much the same except for more cache and a higher clock speed.

Like I said, certain CPUs are not working great right now (like the G3258)...

I am having the same issue. I have a Abit Quad GT motherboard running the Q9650. I am at Windows 7 64 Bit and having No issues. I am assuming its the Window 10 software that somehow is not recognizing the Q9650. I guess we will have to wait. I think somehow its the better move anyway.

You could also check for the latest BIOS update for your motherboard, that could cause it too.

Asus P5Q with a Q9650 installed Windows 10 64bit without issue. Fresh install, wiped drive of Windows 7 which was running for years without issue.
CPU-Z output:
Family 6, Model 7, Stepping A
Ext Family 6, Ext Model 17, Revision E0
Instructions include the required : EM64T (if you are trying to install the 64bit version of windows)

P5Q Bios 1611 (11/26/2008)

Thank for the update. So maybe its not the Q9650. In that case. I am out of ideas as Windows 10 wont even download. Perhaps I'll go back and read the forums.

Haven't tried to install it yet, but the Windows 10 notification app has just launched and said that my PC (including the Q9650 CPU) is now compatible - It's only taken nearly seven months since Win 10 was made available!

Let me be a little more specific here. I have a ABIT motherboard (manufacture went out of business years ago 🙁 ). I have upgraded the bios to the latest (as far as I can go, per Phoenix Bios). All the drivers are also updated. I am running Windows 7 pro 64 bit with the Q9650; runs great. I do see the Windows10 update window; however, it's informing me "Compatibility Issue; The CPU isn't supported. This PC can't run Windows10". Y'all feeling me now?

Same problem with the same CPU. Oddly enough, The PC had windows 10 with an older core 2 duo but when my father was offered a free core2quad and some RAM for free, the PC would no longer boot. upon installing 7 and trying the free upgrade (ending in a couple weeks on july 29th 2016) the pre system check said the Core2Quad 9650 wasn't supported because it didn't support a certain feature needed for windows 10. I wish i wrote down the name of that exact "feature" but, either way, it seems very bizarre. i was considering moving him back to his Core2Duo (for what he uses it for, the RAM would have probably been enough) but now hes taking about just getting a new computer all together.

I will do some further investigating and if I find anything substantial, I'll come back and update this reply but as for now (July 19th 2016) it seems Microsoft will not be supporting this CPU for windows 10 on a claim of the CPUs inability to completely "support windows 10 functionality" and with that type of response, I doubt it ever will (unless that message was wrong somehow)

I just recently had a similar issue with a q9550. Here's what I did. I used an old e8400 to get the install and all the updates. Then I shut it down and installed the q9550 on a whim and it booted up fine not sure about the how or why but it worked for me like that. Hope this helps.
