Hi:

I am trying to equip my HP Slim Desktop with HDR. My monitor has the necessary specs (HDR10), and I verified its capability by connecting a standalone, Panasonic 4k UHD player (with HDR) to it. It has the following expansion slots:

2 M.2; 1 PCIe x16; 1 PCIe x1

Interestingly enough, the next model up (and almost identical specs to mine), the HP Slim Desktop S01 -1048xt has a motherboard that enables HDR. I'd rather not sell my desktop to get the "1048".

Thank you for stopping by.

Solution
I got this (new, $150) on Sunday from Federal Express ground service. It made a 3,000+ mile trip (CA to CT) in 4 days. That's very impressive to me.

It, the PNY NVIDIA VCNT T400 fits snugly, though there is sufficient room for it and the fan to breathe. Unlike my standalone 4K HDR UHD player, it requires some fine tuning (i.e. brightness).

Thanks to all who took time out to help.

Jay

Would you prefer buying new gpu or old gpu. During the gpu shortages gpu prices are very expensive. And what is your budget on this gpu?

I'll buy used if it is in good condition. Preferably ~$200-250, if that is realistic.
Man i thought your budged would be under $100. And you know what i did found a gpu around $100, and its the rx 460. This gpu has a hdmi 2.0, not only that but it is also good at gaming as well in medium settings full hd.
Anyway heres a link that i found:

Thanks but is it compatible? It is PCI-E 3.0 x 8. My slim desktop has expansion slots for: 2 M.2; 1 PCIe x16; 1 PCIe x1.

Anything nvidia from 900 series+ or amd radeon 400 series+ will support HDR. Apart from the chipset, it requires hdmi 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.

The biggest issue with the older cards is pure lack of support, there basically is none now for the 400 cards or the 900 cards, but with Amd its funky because the 500 cards are nothing more than revamped 400 cards.

Best bet would be something like a 1050/ti slim.

400 series is still supported. 300 series and before is not.

The 'slot' is OK, but it is too wide for my slim desktop.

Back to the drawing board. :(
If your going for a $200 gpu you should buy the rx 400 or 500 series or gtx 900 series or gtx 10 series, those suppoerts hdr and 4k
If its too wide you should buy a 1 fan gpu like these cards

The mini's are just very short in length, designed for more standard width mITX cases. For SFF or slim cases that are not standard width you'd need a low profile gpu as that has less height not less length.
Google gtx1050ti slim. There's an msi or zotac or Gigabyte models that I know of. They are also called low profile.

Thanks again for trying to help.

This one has HDR, is narrow (looks less than 4" wide), thin (~ 1", won't hit the power supply) and not too long (~6", so that it won't hit the power supply connector on the motherboard).

That Quadro card has only mini DisplayPorts. You would need an adapter to use it on your monitor with a DP cable. It's also not really the best option for your use case if you decided to switch to a TV which typically only have HDMI ports and would require another adapter.

I did some poking about and it looks like a GT 1030 2GB GDDR5 version should won't work. The GT 1030 DDR4 version "should" also work, but everything I'm finding online suggest it might have playback issues. You could grab the DDR4 version for $110 on newegg and try it out to see if it works for you and return it for a refund if it doesn't. If it doesn't work, your only other real options are probably a used slim/low profile GTX 1050/50ti from ebay. The low profile GTX 1650 non Super is basically double your budget new or used.

The 1030 DDR4 is to be avoided at all costs, it is seriously hampered with uber slow vram memory and you'll get half the performance you'd get with the GDDR5 version. It was a marketing thing to save money on vram costs but capitalize on the 1030 chipset name. It's total junk. Even the Vega graphics on Ryzen APU's is better.

Sure that is true for gaming, but the OP isn't going to be playing games on it as started earlier in the thread. However, I did some more digging for information on the video decoder performance and come to the conclusion that any version of the GT 1030 is not sufficient for 4k 60Hz video play back depending on the source.

So this means the only real option is a GTX 1050/50TI.

Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time time to respond to my question.

I already ordered the PNY NVIDIA QUADRO T400 VCNT400-PB, but I will try the GTX 1050/50ti if the former doesn't work out.
