Can you use a USB wifi dongle on your laptop?

My laptop's wifi range is really short... When I bought it, it could detect my neighbour's wifi. Now it can only detect wifi from the same room. Around 5-8 meters range. If I plugged a USB wifi dongle into my laptop, how will it know whether to use that wifi dongle or the wifi card that came with it?

My laptop is Asus k43s and the wifi dongle I'll be using is DLink DWA123 Wireless N 150

If you disable the wifi on your laptop, and plug in the USB dongle, it should not get confused between the two.
