hi, i got a new wireless modem from the cable company. the modem is located in the main office on the first floor. the computers on the 3rd floor have really weak signal. Since i have the wireless router left, can I put it on the 2nd floor to use it as the wifi booster or wifi range extender? if so, how to wirelessly connect to the modem downstairs or do i have to get a super long Ethernet cable to connect to the modem? Thanks.

You would get a much better result by configuring it as an AP and if you cannot run a cable, use a pair of powerline adapters to attach the AP to the router. The newer 600Mbps models are the fastest at about 100Mbps real world, but if you don't need that much speed you can buy older 500Mbps adapters that will do 40-60Mbps reliably. Avoid putting them on a ground fault interrupt circuit or surge protector for best results.
