Cannot select microphone

Acer laptop with Relatek AC'97 sound chip. I cannot select the microphone as
the device to record from. The stereo mixer is selected and I cannot
unselect it. I am running XP Pro.

Anyone any ideas?

Have you tried recording with the settings as they are?..
