Canoscan functionality

I can't get my Canoscan LIDE210 autoscan (or other buttons) to work (unit is NOT locked). It only works if I access through the windows control panel Devices And Printers. Diagnostic / Troubleshoot indicates "No Problems Detected".. At the the WIA Canoscan LiDE 210 Properties Events tab shows that "No applications are registered for this event"
Indicating none of the buttons are active.

How can I get the events to register?
