Can't download 1607 ms update,

I'm having trouble update the latest MS update 1607 feature of windows 10. It wants to continually download and install it. After waiting about 1/2 hour to configure system and re-boot, it said that all files could not be updated. Because of this there still is a 1607 update waiting to be downloaded again and again. Anyone having this problem? I think there is something wrong with this update. I've never had this before happen not being able to update a ms update. Thanks my winver is 1511 build 10586.753

The best way to do it is to make a USB or DVD using the media creation tool (Math Geek's first link) and then plan on doing a clean install of win 10. If you know you have to do it, it sure beats an emergency. Copy anything off C drive you want to keep and follow This Guide as it should get you to the end.

would be easiest to download the newest iso file and install it that way. works the same as an update and let's you keep all your stuff as is. run the media creator and select "create installation media for another pc" to download the iso, then doubleclick it to mount it and run the setup.exe file to run it.

easiest way i have found to get around the few glitches in the update feature

i'm sure it has happened before. but nothing like a major issue that effected many that i recall seeing.

updating with the iso is plenty safe. no less safe than using update, as that can cause the system to crash and dump everything as well. hopefully you already have important stuff backed up somewhere anyway cause any type of update can cause data loss if something goes seriously wrong. don't wait until you lose everything to wish you had a back-up. we see tons of threads in here with folks asking how to get stuff back AFTER the crash. you can't.

i have done updates this way literally over 100 times, most likely more than that and not had a single instance of anything being lost that way. it'll look like what you have already seen with installing win 10. you'll get the option to start over and remove everything or to "save programs and settings". just select to save everything and after it's done it'll look just like it did other than the changes the update brought in.

if you want to stick with update, then you'll want to do some google searching or a visit to the MS forum to see if anyone else has had this issue and how to resolve it. i've not seen this yet so it is not some major issue a lot of folks are having.

Ok, I still think there is something wrong with the update 1607, not sure. Also I had a "program" line in my start up with msconfig, I disabled it, I never saw that before, any idea why it appeared?

that was probably the final piece of the update for once it rebooted. does your pc say the update is installed? you can see the list of what is installed from the settings app. see if it will let you uninstall it or roll back from it. then reboot and try it again. could be something odd like that.

there is also a win 10 app to help with updates that may get it past the hump as well. i've used it a few times as well.

all viable options if reg update is not working. but check first to see if you can roll back or uninstall that last update to get it off the system before trying again.

I had to finally un-install the rollback rx because it conflicted with the start up of the new 1607. After I did that, 1607 loaded correctly, except now I go to windows update and I get a 0x80080005 error code, any idea what this is? I also can't create a new restore point in windows 10 1607. It says not enough room for shadow file when I create an "image" back up to my external drive also, I have more then enough room for it. That's another problem.

that's a new error code i have not run into yet on win 10. not sure what that is. i have actually not had any issues with update other than a couple updates causing trouble once they were done. so i have not had to troubleshoot update at all.

i don't have time this morning to do any searching for it, but that's something you can do. google the error code with something like "windows 10 update error ______" and see what pops up. someone has had this error before and there is a solution somewhere, just have to find it :)

Do you have any idea why I can't do a "create system image". I get error stating there isn't enough room to save the shadow file. I have 750 gb of free space on my external drive, that should be enough room. I guess I'm missing something. I have the same trouble and message when I try to do a "create a restore point", HELP.. I'm getting frustrated...

at this point the issues are probably related to the problem updating. it claims it finished the update but something went wrong and it was not done correctly.

i am not sure where to go from here other than what i would personally do. that would be to back up my data, including my steam folder, and then reset the OS. it will put everything back to they way it should be and let you go about reinstalling the small stuff and enjoying your pc. i do this for a living and would not spend days tracking down all those major errors. i'd give it a few hours of time, then do a reset. it's real easy now with win 10.

chasing down all these errors with the pc in front of me would be hard enough and trying to do it this way makes it almost impossible for me to fully understand what is going on. not saying you're not explaining it right, but there are a dozen things i'd run through and check that i can't do from my desk :)

i do believe that this is a case where windows is just mucked up and needs to be reset. you can do it with the media creator, or through the reset function built in which will delete everything and put it back to stock windows again. this is where i would be at if this pc was sitting in front of me. too frustrating as you have noted and nearly impossible to track down whatever went wrong with the updater when it had the trouble it had.

try this before the reset:

right click start button
choose command prompt (admin)
Copy paste this into window:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press enter

then type SFC /scannow and press enter
What dism does is clean the image reset uses to fix windows, best make sure its right before resetting :)
SFC cleans system files, it might fix update

Trying to update from 10586 to 14393 always causes issues as its the original version of win 10 to latest

Just to let you know after looking at several articles on google, I found the following that fixed my "restore" that didn't work, plus my "image backup" that didn't work. It was in the VSS (volume shadow service). I really thought the windows update was going to work after this fix.
1. Right click on my computer (my pc)
2. Select manage
3. Select "services" from the tree node
4. Scroll down to "volume Shadow Copy"
5. Select Properties
6. Make sure "start up type" is "AUTOMATIC", (mine was manual)
7. Re-boot system.
I then checked to make sure those changes still were there.
I ran Image back up, worked fine
I ran restore to create a restore point, worked fine

However the windows update still didn't work, said it could not install files
If ms comes out with an update to 1607, I won't be able to get it unless there is another way to download to my pc then install it.
Time will tell, again, thanks for all you help, no one seems to know the answer.

does this not simply reset windows as well? i did not mention it since that is what i thought it does. or is it more of the old "repair" feature that just scanned the install for bad files and fixed them??

SFC scans/fixes the system files... DISM scans/fixes the image thaty both SFC uses and a Reset would use ,and repairs it via windows update.

SFC uses the image DISM cleans, I normally get people to run DISM after SFC but this time i did them in reverse.

neither do anything to a users files.

Any way to download directly outside of Microsoft? Their update tools don't work with my internet.

don't believe MS has any direct links to an iso file. you can sign up as an insider and get direct iso files for those beta builds. but they are not really suggested for daily driver machines due to the betas always having bugs and other issues.

but don't think there is another direct way to get an iso other than using the media creator tool.
