Question Can't enter BIOS with blank SSD

I purchased a new SSD (NVMe) to upgrade an inexpensive ASUS laptop to 1GB instead of 128GB of storage.

Since the laptop only has on NVMe slot, I don't have any other computers with NVMe slots, and I don't own an external NVMe enclosure, I cloned the existing drive to an external HDD via Clonezilla. Afterwards, I replaced the old drive with the new, but when booting the system, I can't get past the ASUS "splash" screen. It does not advance, nor does it allow me to enter the boot menu (Esc) or BIOS setup (F2). If I remove the new drive then I can (regardless of whether or not I reinstall the old.)

I have attempted to try again after disabling Fast Boot but there was no change.

Help?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the new SSD was purchased from Crucial as one of their recommendations for my laptop.

Try another cloning program; many people here prefer Macrium.

What is model name of your laptop?
What is model name of old M.2 drive and new M.2 drive ?

Thanks for responding SkyNetRising!

Laptop model: Asus 14" Vivobook (TP412FA-OS31T)
New M.2 drive: Crucial P3 1TB PCIe 3.0 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD, up to 3500MB/s - CT1000P3SSD8 (Link on crucial website: https://www.crucial.com/ssd/p3/ct1000p3ssd8/ct21504809)
Old M2 drive: Kingston RBUSNS8180DS3128GJ (from System Information)

Also here is a link on Crucial's website saying my laptop is compatible with the SSD i bought: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/asus/vivobook-flip-14-tp412fa?series(-)P3#ssd

Kingston RBU SNS8180DS3 128GJ - is SATA drive.
Crucial CT1000P3SSD8 is NVME drive.

Although specs of your laptop say - both sata and nvme drives are supported, but
there might be some compatibility issue with this particular model.

Question: The specs page of that laptop (https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/For-Home/Vivobook/ASUS-Vivobook-Flip-14-TP412/techspec/) specify the slot for the drive as: M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0x2 . I see the NVMe drive I purchased is listed as PCIe 3x4. Googling suggests this should not be an issue due to backwards compatibility, but.... ?

Thanks again.
