Whenever I try to open an .avi file using either windows media player 9 or
divx, all I get are diagonal stripes and black. The audio works properly
however. I've made sure I have all the proper codecs with GSpot but to no
avail.

I'm running windows XP on an old pentium II 400 mhz. dxdiag says
everything's ok and directdraw is definitely enabled so I'm stumped...any
ideas?

Turn down video acceleration in vid card properties a notch or two,
reboot, and try it again...
