Question can't get into old hdd folders with usb to sata reader

So i bought a usb to sata hard drive reader to pull old files from my previous pc, i go to open the user folder and it says i don't have permission to open it, but says i can get permanent access to the folder, thing is, it's taking forever to load, like the progress bar keeps going all the way up to the x and then doesn't move any further, does it just take a hell of a long time or is something wrong with the drive? i have no other way to use this drive and i really need those files.

take ownership on the folder.

the disk could be failing.

I did this and now when I switch the drive on it stops windows 8 from working, like it appears in the drives section and as soon as this happens windows explorer stops responding
