Cant hook up the modem to a different computer?

The computer i currently have it hooked up to needs to be repaired, so i'm trying to hook it up to a different computer (on a different floor) so i can still have internet. But i can't get it to work. I plug everything in and it does pop up on my computer but the internet still doesn't work and it says limited. I though maybe there was something wrong with the phone jack i was using but i plugged a phone in and it worked (is there another way to figure that out?). I have an HP pavilion 500 pc and am using a verizon d link modem. Can anyone provide any form of help?

Limited usual indicate a problem with your net connection or a problem with your modem/router. Try resetting the internet modem/router and see if that works.

Well i did turn it back off several times. It workes completely fine when hooked up to the other computer.
