I plugged a USB stick into a Synology NAS and it immediately disconnected all PCs and Macs connected to it on the network (all wired connections). After removing the USB the Macs and Windows XP PC reconnect without issue. But the two Windows 10 PCs were unable to connect to the NAS through Windows Explorer. I couldn't remove the connection from showing up in explorer so I used

net use Z: /delete

in the command line to delete the mapped drive. I then tried to restablish the connection to the NAS through explorer and it wouldn't work. I tried to restablish the connection via command line using net use again but I got a system 87 error code. I updated the Windows 10 to the latest version and I could then access the NAS by adding a network location but still couldn't map it as a network drive.

I wanted to avoid using the registry editor but will it be necessary to do so to fix this? I'm hesitant to change too many settings as there's very fussy scanners connected to these Windows 10 PCs that may break and cause more problems if I screw this up. Any help would be much appreciated.

First of all stay out of the registry. Registry edits are a last resort and should only be attempted after a full system backup including the Registry itself.

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Which model Synology NAS?

With an immediate disconnect my thought is that the USB connection (plug or port) is causing a short of some sort.

How are various network drives configured: Drive letter, partitions, etc.?

Plug the USB stick into a USB port on your main computer. Is the USB stick listed as a drive?

Run Disk Manager and expand the screen so all can be seen. Take a screenshot and post the screenshot here via imgur (www.imgur.com).

There could be some other conflict.
