Hi everyone,

I have been struggling with this for weeks - whenever I plug my computer into a TV through an HDMI cable, the screen visual transfers perfectly but no sound comes through the TV.

Please note that I have scoured the forums and have tried all of the basic suggestions that people have given:
-HDMI or similar does not show up in 'Playback Devices'
-All of my drivers are up to date

I am running Windows 8.1. I have an ASUS Q550L notebook (can see all the specs here: Asus 15.6" TouchScreen Laptop Intel Core i7 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive Q550LF-BSI7T21 - Best Buy)

Please help!! Thanks!

Solution
If I had to guess, I'd say it's a handshake issue (your laptop and television are not communicating the HDMI signal appropriately). In Windows 8.1, if you bring up the Windows audio controls in the lower right task bar, you'll likely find that your television does not appear as an audio choice.

I'd recommend trying two things to see if it solves your problem:

1) Restart the Windows audio service. Press your Windows key + R to bring up the Run dialogue box. Type in services.msc and select the Windows audio service. Restart it. Now try to select your television as the audio device.

2) If the above step is unsuccessful, restart your computer while the television is on and connected to your laptop through HDMI. Audio should play...

after trying many tips given was best to go to the page and look asus audio driver for Windows 8.1, restart my laptop and ready.
my laptop is a x450l and is Panasonic Viera plasma tv, the implementation is as audio wizard

Solution: open Control Panel > Sound > Right-Click "Speakers" > Show Disabled Devices

HDMI audio output should now appear.

Double-click HDMI output, to view its properties.

At the bottom of the window, you will see device usage. Change to Enable, or "Use this device".

Complete. Sound should now come from TV.

Followed several threads on video/no sound with HDMI and none of the solutions worked for me until someone noticed they had two listings in device manager for HDMI sound controller and one was disabled. I had two also but both were working properly. I looked around some more and saw "Other devices." A double click brought up "Unknown device." I believe there was a button to install drivers, I clicked it, it searched the computer then online and in a couple of minutes the sound came on. For your info, this Samsung plasma worked fine with my Vista laptop but I switched to a new HP Envy 15t with Win 7 and that's where the problem started. Hope this helps someone.

Right click on speaker icon in task bar, select playback devices, if HDMI option not showing right click on working icon and select show hidden option, then right click on HDMI option and select enable

go to control panel...click sound...........click manage audio devices........it should show speakers (nothing else) in the empty white area right click ....click show hidden .........you should see what ever you are plugged into ie tv....then right click it and enable.......wah lah....I just had to do the same thing!

Keeping the TV connected to the laptop, I uninstalled the Nvidia (in my case) graphics driver through device manager and restarted the computer. After restarting, go to device manager, scan for hardware changes, find your graphics card, and update driver. Now I can see my tv on the sound devices.

asus 550n jk, a few days old. Getting no sound on hdmi but picture was OK. As many bright people suggested here, I downloaded the latest intel driver for embedded intel gpu's, which included my 4600 version, and after installation hdmi sound works via hdmi cable from the asus laptop through my onkyo receiver to my speakers. Thank you smart people and I am lucky to live when we have the internet at our fingertips to find these solutions. 10 years ago, I would have been sitting day and night to find a solution. And, up yours Asus for not handling this flaw. Why should us customers handle your shortcomings? This is my last Asus product, period. Just had enough of finding solutions NOT communicated by manufacturers. Thank you, internet community! Shame on you, Asus!

So i just upgraded my ASUS from Windows 8.1 64 bit to windows 10, and there were some issues occured such as bad image, blue screen, and so on. So i reset my PC, remove all files on the driver, i realized that some of my ASUS drivers are missing and all of my drivers are renewed by the Windows 10 driver. And it solved my problem which is no sound through TV in Windows 8.1. Hopefully it will help because this is something that i have been struggling for awhile too :)

I had the exact same problem. Struggled for days. I have an ASUS N750JV.
It worked for a while I don't know why but it didn't last. Once I plugged the HDMI cable on my Playstation I could not make it work again on my PC.
Now what I did yesterday to make it work (it still working even after unplugging it) : I went on the ASUS official site, in Drivers & Tools, for a Windows 8.1 64 bits, in VGA, I downloaded Intel Graphics Driver (I didn't touch Nvidia) Version V10.18.10.3308.02

Hope it helps someone.

Old post but wanted to +1 @crisan_tiberiu
I had speakers, usb headset, usb handsfree device and HDMI was not registering. Solution I did without restarting was to disable one of the USB devices I currently wasn't using and the HDMI audio popped up. Set as default and problem solved.
