I have Nvidia GT 650M and Intel HD Graphics 4000 on my computer. After a fresh install of Windows 8.1, I installed the latest drivers for both and everything looks good. But when I try to set Nvidia as "default graphics processor" from the Nvidia Control Panel it switches back to Auto-Select automatically whatever I do.

I re-installed both drivers and it still persists.

Solution

Actually he can still update to the latest drivers.
In fact its better to update provided that he downloaded the suitable drivers for your GPU
The Nvidia initial hardware check will verify either everything will go smoothly anyway.
You will only be able to install the drivers if its compatible.
So you shouldn't worry about compatibility.

What might happens is that the intel driver might overrides the nvidia queue for graphics if you install the intel drivers last.

It's a laptop. It was fine before installing Windows again.
