I'm sorry but,(and this hurts to say)if M$ had not continued improving Directx, we wouldn't be where we are on PCs right now. We'd still be playing games on 16mb video cards and P3 933's. They've done alot to keep gaming going. You can rag on GFWL but with the 360 and DirectX, they have done a lot to keep gaming alive. If they had dropped out of the gaming world, it would've taken competitors years to catch up and fill in the gap. And let's not forget, Apple has done absolutely nothing to further gaming at all.

Highly unlikely...
OpenGL would still be providing new versions and graphics that are good enough that you would need a card with much better graphics than a 16mb card on a P3 could handle.

Personally I've always been an OpenGL fan.
When my friend had a Voodoo 2 using the Glide API. I didn't like the way the graphics looked on his compared to my nVidia TNT card. With all the games we played I always felt that mine looked less washed out and more vivid and real looking.
.. But lately I've played some very good looking DirectX games. I won't discount Rage... I still think the graphics look great.
Honestly I'm more excited about the new unreal engine screen shots and the new crytek engine both look very promising and next gen!

[citation][nom]Kenny Strawn[/nom]A word to you Carmack: Don't believe M$ FUD!!! OpenGL is open source, while DirectX is a proprietary API. Well, whatever. At least DirectX doesn't match up to Clutter...[/citation]
Not true. OpenGL is an open specification, but it is not open source. It is implemented on a driver level by ATI/NVIDIA/whatever and until Vista was also included as an MS developed driver. And none of that changes the fact that GL has been playing catchup since DX9 was released.
