Carnevil Graphics Speed setting

I have a brand new Carnevil boardset / hard drive, which powers up in
my Jamma cabinet just fine. It will sit and run in attract mode with
no problems, although I do notice some subtle "flicker" when the game
information screen appears, just before attract mode starts.

Whenever a game is started, usually when the jester is taunting you
and the spiral graphics are in the background, the game resets.
Sometimes it goes longer, and sometimes it resets at the choose
screen.

I checked voltages, etc. and everything was fine. I finally checked
the DIP settings, and noticed that the graphics speed was set to
51MHz. This is bank U8, switches 4 and 5 -- both off. My manual
only lists 45 MHz and 47 MHz, with 45 being the default -- both
switches on. When I change the dip switch to this setting, the game
works fine, with no flicker or resetting ever.

The strange thing is that although my manual lists otherwise, the DIP
test in test mode indicates that 51MHz is the factory setting.

But, this picture of the Carnevil motherboard on system16.com
http://www.system16.com/midway/boards/carnevil_pcb.jpg
seems to show that switches 4 and 5 in U8 are indeed on, which
indicates 45Mhz.

Is this a problem? Should the graphics speed by 51Mhz? Would some
people with Carnevils mind checking their settings?

Thanks alot!

Bruce,
My Carnevil does the flickering thing also on start up and for about 15
minutes afterward. No resetting though. It seems after it "warms"
up, it goes away. I will check my speed settings and repost.

Thank you Troy!

Just guessing, but if it runs fine at 45 with no game slowdown, I'd leave it
there. I'm guessing the speed settiing you refer to is the graphics
processor speed. So, even if 51 is the factory, your board might be having
issues at 51, and underclocking it to 45 fixes them.

Also, you might try a fan blowing on the GPU to keep it cool.

Don't know Carnevil, but this is standard stuff for PC tweaking.

Thanks for the response.

That is what I figured also -- especially in that the game would run
forever without rebooting in the attract mode (which is just FMV), but
resets and has graphics glitches as soon as the actual game starts.

The wierd thing is that in Test Mode, it indicated that the board was
set to 51, which is a factory setting. But, the manual that I just
purchased indicates that the factory setting is 45 (and there was no
mention of 51).

I am trying to find a few people with Carnevils to check their boards,
just to see.

The board might be a 133mhz cpu board and not a 200mhz cpu board. If you have a slower CPU on the seattle PCB the game will lock up or reset after the jester goes in circle and does his riddle. I have both a 133mhz & a 200mhz CPU Seattle PCB board here and that is what happens when I run Carnevil on a 133mhz speed Seattle PCB. It might be your problem it might not be. Sites like system16 show Carnevil running on a 133mhz speed Seattle which is FALSE, it needs a 200mhz speed Seattle PCB to run it.
