Cats around pinball machines?

I've got a few kitties that like to climb on everything in my house.
They don't have front claws but they do have back claws. I'm guessing
they will jump on any machine I get at least a few times until I teach
them not to. Anyone have pins and cats? The cats do any damage to the
machines? Know a good way to keep them away from the machines?

I've found that a good ol' Rottweiler sleeping under a machine does a
great job of keeping cats away. Seriously though, try placing aluminum
foil sheets on the playfield glass...cats hate to walk on it. Or, if
you want something less obtrusive, sheets of crackly plastic do the same
thing.

Play them a lot. I have found that the best way to ensure my cats want
no part of this pinball business is to crank up the volume and play
frequently. If your cats are anything like mine, nothing pisses them
off quite like the cacaphony of noise pouring out of a pinball while
it's being played. I finally found something they want less to do with
than their arch-nemesis, the vacuum.

I would be more concerned about cat hair getting into the machine over
time. Try posting a sign in the area of the machines that says: I WILL
CUT OFF MORE THAN YOUR CLAWS IF YOU JUMP ON MY PINBALL MACHINES.
Hopefully this will work.

If you have male cats keep them off! They'll spray, and it takes paint
off, and ruins backglasses.

I dislike cats but my wife and I have an understanding. Pins in the
basement, cats upstairs.

Tin foil works great. Use two pieces of foil 18"x18" and run a power
cord to the nearest 120 volt receptacle, hook up hot wire to one piece
and neutral wire to the other. Get the video camera set up and enjoy
the fun! Who knows, you may even win some big $$$ from one of those
goofy home video shows. MEOW!!

wait till they take a nap ontop of the head, then go into your test menu and
go to "fire knocker".

give them away and use money saved from vet bills, food, and cat toys
to buy more machines. aren't you glad you asked for some advice? ;-)

I have had a number of cats (all desexed and house trained) who love
the pinballs.

So far they have done no damage.

They jump from the backbox onto the playfield glass (six kilo/ten pound
cat) and have never had a great or break on the glass.

As for turning the game on to scrae them I found that my cats will
happily sit on the machine while you are playing and try to catch the
ball running up and down the machine during play.

Be careful if doing restoration or maintenance. All my cats have
thought an open coin door is an invitation to explore. I have also had
one jump through the top when I had the head off (gottlieb sys 1). No
damage but they can hurt themselves or jagged metal or yank a wire
loose unknowingly.

Otherwise I have found the cats love my machines as much as I do.

I have 5 cats and a lot more pins.. not a real problem.

Only make sure if you work on a pin that you always close the coindoor
when you leave the room ! (or at least check real well that there's no
cat in the cabinet before you switch the game back on).
Cats love to get into pins when they're open.

They don't scratch the cabinets, just like to walk over them (usually
to ask for attention when I work on a pin for too long) or lie on top
of the backbox (make sure your backbox bolts are in place !)

You just have to clean the glass a bit more often than before..

btw if they're kittens they may go crazy if you play a game, when they
see the lights flash or want to try to catch the pinball.
(watching one of our cats was funny, he tried to catch the ball, and
each time the ball went into the outhole he jumped onto the ground to
search for the pinball as he thought it fell out of the cabinet).

You can have fun with your cats, but that'll learn there's something to
see if you play a game and teach them to get onto the pins when you
play.
So if you want to try to learn them not to walk over the pins, don't
try this and make sure you put them on the floor before you start a
game..

I have three cats. They all like sitting on the pinball lightboxes.

One of my cats loves the tops of the back boxes... hangs out up there all
the time... ready to fly across the room and land on my shoulders when
I least expect it.

They all like to hang out on the playfield glasses on my pins in the
kitchen during dinner, since they get whacked if they jump onto the table.

I don't think there's much damage they can do to the games (unless they
confuse them with the litter box for some reason?!) Pin legs don't have
a 'good' texture for scratching, and there's nothing they can do to hurt
the glass. (Hairballs wash off easily).

I have three cats all of who like sto sleep on my machines. they find
the ones that have the pop bumpbers on and sleep on top of them. My
middle cat will not let me play a game without being involved and will
simply lay on the glass and watch the ball move around, and sometime
lays by the flippers so I cant see. I think he takes pleasure in
distracting me while im playing. Funny thing is if I am working on
them they stay clear. but when the first bell rings zoom, he is there.
All i have to do is wipe the glass of every now and then to get the
cat hair off. I also find they like to sleep on top of the head, but
dont budge when im playing. guess they like the view.

Neutered males don't have this issue =-P

Tell that to our neutered male cat that sprays all over the house.

Seems backwards to me 🙂

I like cats and have never had a problem with cats on my games. Sure they
climb up there, but any cat worth his salt will make that jump without
utilizing claws to get there. I worry only when they dive from the backbox
onto the pf glass. So far just an annoyance, but one of these days the cat
is bound to make diamonds form the pf glass. When that happens she'll
probably make something else on the pf too!

Other than jumping inside when my back is turned, BobCat leaves them
alone. But in the past:

Cute pictures. Print the picture of the shaved cat, show that to your
collection of cats and warn them that any abuse of the machines (jumping
from backbox, spraying, etc.) will result in a severe haircut. That would
keep my cats in line.

One of my cats loves the sound of LotR and will sit on the glass and chase
the ball. She's pretty good at blocking the view of the ring shot, so I
don't want to hear any of you bitching how hard DTR is...
