cd rom disappeared

hi,
I cant seem to find my cd rom drive in my computer! i
have an "!" mark over the drive in device manager, and i
have tried unistalling and reinstalling the drive too.
i cant think of any system changes that could have caused
this. i can use the drive to boot the reset disc but dont
really wana format my hard drive yet. any ideas? PS, i
have an externel usb cd rom drive and that is not working
either. my other usb devices work ok so i guess its not
the usb controllers?
