CD-RW /DVD Combo

I'm looking for a decent CD-RW, but I don't plan on making too many CDs and won't mind taking 10-15 minutes to burn one. I've seen models from Toshiba, Ricoh & Iomega that offer 4X or 6X Write, and also read DVDs. This seems like a perfect match for me since I'd like to get both a CDRW & DVD, but I don't have two 5.25" bays for them and the above models cost less than $200. Does anybody have any experience with these combo drives? Are they any good?

Well, I prefer separated devices, but if you need to, go for it.

You might want to look at maximum pc's site. They used one of these in there ultimate multimedia pc computers. The one on the front cover of the magazine with the plasma monitor.

i had a ricoh combo drive (6x/4x/24x and 4x dvd) and it was so so. it was slow, but you said you didn't mind that. the dvd playback wasn't spectacular and i did end up with a few coasters. the concept is great but the performance isn't nearly what is is now that i have separate drives. if you have only one external 5-1/4 then it's an option. if uou have 2 then yank out the regular cd-rom and buy an 8x/4x/32x for about $125 (creative labs, from pricewatch) and 12x dvd for about $80 (creative labs, from pricewatch)

I have seen a new Ricoh 12X/10X/32X w/ 8X DVD, model # MP9120A that perfoms rather well against Plextor. The review is at the following link http://www.storagereview.com.

I have found it for $259 at www.onvia.com. Once I get some cash I think I'll get it.

Don't forget to take "perks" into consideration. Will your CDRW have burnproofing (or something similar)? Will it support overburn? 80 minute CDs? RAW data and audio extraction? ATA66? To me, the features of a CDRW are as important, if not more so, than the speed or cost. Plextor 12x/10x/32x is currently my choice for a CDRW. Then, get yourself a GOOD DVD player. There are many to choose from. I would probably go for Creative, since they offer excellent support, and a good controller card as well.

Plextors are my number one choice for CDRWs also.

You can go to HansanSystems.com for the COMBO.

Ricoh CD_RW 24x/6x/4x & 4X DVD(RETAIL) is real good one.
As far as of COMBO,or separate, again is of your needs. Do you have enoght open bays slots?. If not, then COMBO is the choice.

Post your questions here, and will try to get back to you.

Any others good CD-RW info. will be welcome here.
