Got asked a question by a cust today that I didnt know the answer to, when a burner is a 8x4x32, and the burner writes at 8x, what does the 8x refer to, it is 8 times faster than what?, and what is the time difference between writing a 8x and a 10x when burning a 640m cd

It is 8x the speed it would take a 1x burner to write the cd, i'll explain:

A 1x burner will take 74 min to burn a normal length full CD. A 2x will do it in 37 min. A 8x will burn it in 9 1/4 mins. A 10x would do it in 7.4 mins. You take the length of the CD in min's and divide it by n, where n is the speed of the burner as in nX.

Thanks Pill, that clears it up, I use them, but no ones ever asked me about speeds before

Long ago in days of yore....the cd was a single speed device that read @ 150Kbs. the X factor is the factor to which the multiple is applied.
Therefore a 10 X CD is 10 X 150 Kbs 1.5Mb ish......give or take the odd 1024 per K.
