CD Writer Doesn't Write

After I recovered my operation system (XP), my CD writer
doesn't write, and it can't recognize any blank disk
either. From Device Manager, the drive is shown as a CD
ROM. I tried to get on the manufacturer's site to
download the original driver, but I can't find anyone
that can work on my CD writer. The CD writer was
originally installed into the computer when I bought the
PC. I am thinking about finding the original driver from
my recovery disks, but I don't know what type of file(s)
is used for the CD writer. Can anyone give me some
suggestions? Please be as specific as possible. Thank you
in advance.

Daniel

Use Device Manager to remove/uninstall the drive, reboot, and
let it be re-detected. This may be all you need-let
us know what happens.

Hi, V Green,
I uninstalled the drive, rebooted, and Windows detected
the drive, but still the CD writer can't recognize any
blank disk, and it can't write. Thanks,
Daniel

I think you're implying that it can read OK, but
I can't be sure...Does it?

Try right-clicking on it from Explorer and selecting
Properties. Do you see a "Recording" tab?

Hi, V Green,
Yes, "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" is unchecked
under the "Recording" tab. I checked it, and now the
drive works pretty good.
The problem is for XP Home Edition. If I encountered the
same problem on Windows 2000 Professional, can I used the
same procedure? Thanks a lot.
Daniel

No, W2K does NOT natively know how to record to CD.

You need third party software to do that.

Glad you're up and running.

No, Windows 2000 does not have built-in CD writing. You have to have a
program like Nero Burning Rom or Roxio Easy CD Creator to burn discs on
Windows 2000 (or any earlier version).
