Celeron 766 vs. Duron 800

I am just wondering. Is it fair to compare Celeron 766 to Duron 800? Why not to Duron 750?

Easy....
Fastest Duron vs Fastest Celeron.

How else would you test AMD's best to Intel's best? This test shows once again that AMD is kicking Intel's backside.

i agree that that test would have been more fair. the test scores would have been a little closer. however, the price would have been even less and i think that part of the point of the article (other than the duron thrashed that intel piece of...all over the place) was that these were the two fastest "budget" cpu's from the two producers. the 34 difference in speed should be irrelevent compared to the huge gap in price.

There still producing celeron's?? ewwww 8)

At that price I'd advise everyone thinking about them to save $5 and get a T-Bird 900 for $165. Performace on a budget.

hehe. Oh yea just had a thought. Has Intel ever had a True "budget" processor. It seems like its always their competition that has the budget sector. Intel just hasnt had to experince of tryiing to float on substandard performace.

Think back to before the introduction of the Athlon. Remember what the most amazing processor was then? It was the Celeron: it was a budget processor and it kicked some major ass. It OC'd like no other processor, routinely walloped the K6 core in nearly every benchmark, and was cheap.
The problem was that Intel realized that a powerful budget chip undermined their ASP, and since the ASP is king of Intel's world, they refused to upgrade the Celeron when they re-revised the P6 core into CuMine. So yeah, Intel did produce an amazing budget chip, but it got caught in a fear-inspired timewarp and now just sucks compared to the competition.
All that aside, it would be interesting to see sales numbers on Celerys vs. Durons.

You seem to be repeating from the review

Anyway I think it's fair to compete both chips because... well, with the mere 33MHz difference and such a large performance margin what can you say?

Smart guys are not smart; they only see things in different perspective.

Shrug. I might have been repeating, but it was cause Brent asked the question.

Hey,

I don't know but Celerons can't compete with Durons.

There is way more to this than just the core speed. The core speed of the CPU is just one spec out of many many more of a certain platform. But it seems that the companies want you to believe the core speed of a CPU is what counts. Being a reader of Tom's Hardware Guide you know better :) It's the complete platform having an influence on the numbers in this case.

So what we basically do is the "Olympic approach", we let the fastest available models/setups of a product line compete, because people are interested in the highest available performance for a certain application. Or simple said: Who is the fastest in different application/benchmark areas?

This said, it's still somewhat like comparing apples to oranges whatever your approach is. That's why we started to look at the system costs and more and more offer the price/performance ratio charts. Personally I think this is one of the best ways to really try to compare different platforms. It shows you how much speed you get for your hard earned dollars.

Basically you could also ask, if it is fair to compare a product that is X us$ less in price to a more expensive one. Probably it's not, is it?

We'll in my opinion it's only fair to compare processers which have been set to their Factory Settings in speed, And to my knowledge A Duron 750 or 800 could probbly beat a Celeron 766, Unoverclocked. Just becase of The AMDs reputation to perform tasks more effectively and more efficiently, and requireing less, much less energy. Better for the comsumer in the long run, Because after 2-3 years a Energy bill difference of ~40$ is a very big Saving.

Question: How did you FIND this old forum board? You're only posting lemesee now 5 and a half years or so since the last post. (BTW it was on THWG's "New" forum topics because you posted on it...that's how I found it).
