celeron sucks??? or ??

tomorrow i'm getting my athlon xp 2800+ i think it will be a way better choice especially compared to my celeron 1.7 and i now totally agree that celeron sucks. and i am the is the best choice by far. (not that i am an AMD fanatic just because i am getting one but...) intel 2.8 will cost at least 260CAD while i can get a 2800+ for just 120CAD (no fan will cost me 140CAD) plus a mobo with KT400 is just for 50CAD these days plus a fan that can go with it for 25CAD (still not even 200CAD in total). even it might not be as fast as a P4 2.8Ghz it will have a very very close performance. About celeron i now believe that it totally sucks. i've seen the benchmarks of celeron 2.8Ghz compared to P4 2.53 and athlon XP2500+ not even half the performance. Plus celeron 2.8 is way more expensive than a XP 2500+ well i am sorry but i was such an idiot to get a celeron cpu and will now call everyone that way who buys one. intel can only sell those cpu's to grandparents who just knows how to double click. i dont wanna turn this thing into an AMD Intel argument they both have their advantages but to be honest AMD looks like they;re doing a lot better job. i am sure with my new 2800+ i'll get tons of more fps in every game. (application performance might not be as good as intel though)

Keep in mind that a 2800+ will require at least PC2700 memory to run at its full speed on a 166MHz FSB, PC3200 is highly recommended if you plan to overclock. I seriously doubt that your Celeron system featured that kind of high end memory in the first place, plan your purchase accordingly.

Considering that you waited nearly a year before digging this thread out of its grave, you should wait until mid june to take advantage of much lower prices. Both intel and AMD are slated to launch new CPUs and sockets by the end of may, making a good buy an even better one since each major relase end up lowering the cost of mid-ranged products.

Everyone let stay with the facts here. Celerons are Low budget cpus as well as duron. Like one guy seid it like a car. Geo car vers a Mustang. But celerons are for people Dont play Much games. If anything they check there email talk to there friends online. Or ues word. And Pictures.

This is also true with durons.

Yes we all agree Intel making false ads. Oh it a fast computer with a celeron in it. It like saying a Geo can beat a Mustang. Only way that could happen is load geo in a jet and have it fly to a differnt state.

But People who dont know much about computers should do there research.

I agree. Friend of mine needed a new computer so he went to Office Depot and bought a Celeron 2.7Ghz system for ~$200 after mail in rebates the other day. For browsing the net and playing solitaire that is more than enough.

Yes it has integrated graphics and a celeron but not everyone out there needs something faster and for $200 he couldn't go wrong.

Duron is cheaper and faster.....

AXP is cheaper.

Although $200 is cheap. For any computer.

VIA actually HURT AMD's reputation.

ok lets stay with the facts then ... what i am saying is :) u get an AMD 2800+ and it still costs u way less than a celeron 2.7ghz :) i mean what is the fact here? i understand celeron users are mostly internet email etc (simply everyday appication) users. but why does it still cost way more?????? u know what .. i mean when it comes to compare prices and performance now .. i am comparing celeron with athlon XP which is twice a better choice and P4 to amd 64 (u can buy the slowest amd 64 for a bit more then 250cad now, which is just about the price of P4 2.6) which one would u choose ??? celeron over athlon XP or P4 over amd 64???? well i was honestly an intel fanatic in the days of PIII with my PIII 650@ 975mhz but now intel totally sucks ... (btw i am not an AMD fanatic whoever makes the best product at the best price gets my appreciation)... anyways... u know what u guys gotta see the unreal 3 engine .. DOOM III sucks sucks sucks compared to it .. and ofcourse Half life 2 ...

Well really for me it depended on Mobilty. I look for Amd 64 in a laptop that had two hard drive slots. But I could not find it. So I went with p4 3.4 ee Pro-star laptop.

But When windows 64 comes out. I will be giving Amd and Intel a hard look if both has 64 bit at the time. When I go for a new Desktop. If intel dont have it or they are still having problems with heat. I will go for Amd fx chips.

But I'm not the type that will go amd or intel better. The computer I'm on was the best for it time. But that how I look at them.

Wow. This was the longest thread ever to determine that modern Celerons blow, Durons are ok, and AXP's are the fastest for the price, but not as fast as P4's. Now that we all know this, I hope that you enjoy your new setup-which will destroy your old celery. Regards

Why did that last post crack me up... truly ROTFLOL... now lets start a new post on how PCI video cards blow... but they are better than onboard and fall way behind AGP...

Although my poor nephew playing Halo on a Celeron 2.0 and a PCI ATI 9100... I told him I would give him Farcry after he beats Halo... FarCry will rock on that HP...

Durons are awesome if combined with modern platforms like nForce2 Ultra400.

My personal experience is enough to prove this (Duron 1 GHz (morgan) + ABIT NF7 v.2.0). It should have no problem with running neck to neck with Celeron 2.6 GHz + i865

BTW, why not get the 2700+? it's faster than 2800+ in most cases and cheaper

well what i can see from ur benchmarks is even ur 1ghz duron is way faster than my old celeron 1.7ghz .. tsk tsk ... shame on celeron .. and speaking of new cpus.. for the price of P4 3.2ghz wouldnt u guys get an AMD 64?? :)

Anyone who has read this far on the thread must be really concerned about budget chips and would benefit from this article:

Anyone who builds their own system and picks a celery is crazy, but hey-it's not my dinero.

yeah i was that crazy to build a system with a celeron 1.7 and i was almost making the same mistake again thinking about a celeron 2.6 or 2.8 ... good thing i got an athlon xp this time .. it even costed me less... even new generation celerons are terrible in benchmarks (i read a benchmark about 2.8 celeron .. it was even way way slower than an athlon 2400+) does anyone have a clue about the future of celerons ? like are they planing to increase that 128k cache ??? or will it always be this terrible and expensive???

They have plan to ditch the whole "NetBurst" artitechture in not-so-far future.

i just got my Athlon XP but i am planning to switch to amd 64 soon ... they are amazing gaming cpu's ... so do u like ur cpu? what scores do u get in benchmarks???

Yes, actually I'm very satisfied with my processor. It's extremely fast in games, it's certainly great for what I need it for. Extremely recommended for games, as well as other demanding tasks. Buy the 3000+, it's the best bang for the buck.

so would 64 2800 be a good choice??? cos i dont wanna pay like too too much for hardware and 2800 looks like such a good price for a 64bit cpu

I don't know about the price difference where you live, but here in Sweden, the 3000+ OEM costs only $50 more than the boxed 2800+, and the boxed 3000+ is about only $300-400, and the diffs between the OEM 2800+ and 3000+ is even less. So I'd recommend the 3000+, because you get a fine performance boost for a small extra fee.

However if you just hold out a few more weeks, Socket 939 processors will be out, and you might want to wait for that. Unfortunately, those processors might or might not have a significantly higher price. In any way, I'd recommend waiting just two or three more weeks to see what the new S939 CPU's will cost, before making your decision. If the price of the 939 processors will be similar to the 754's, then I'd recommend the 939's, but if the 754's will be cheaper, or more importantly, offer a better price/performance ratio, then I'd recommend a Socket 754 processor.

In any event, wait until the beginning of June to see what the prices of the 939's will be.

it looks like the first thing i will need for amd processors is a good heatsink cos this one is heating a lot. when i put it under the desk it goes up to 65C, while the case is open it goes down to 30C :) most prob. air circulation problem under the desk :)
