change settings on a laptop's monitor

so I took off the monitor from my old laptop and bought some new cords and basically set it up as a secondary monitor for my computer. Is there a way to change the laptop monitor's settings to make the screen a bit darker/clearer? I don't have my old laptop anymore and it's really just a screen. All the old connectors were replaced with new ones off of eBay.

Not without telling us WHAT you have. There are probably 100,000 different models of TV's out there...

Oh, sorry, I assumed wrong. I thought something along the lines of one size fits all. The controller board I bought says it's for a "LVDS VGA LCD LP171WP4."

Do you have a LG PHILIPS LP171WP4 laptop?

oops! fiddled around with the buttons on the controller and found that one of the buttons brings up the settings.
