Hello Tom's Hardware,

So, today I'm writing this thread, because I am really hesitating on a screen change. One of my friend has got a ASUS VP247QG and has got some problems in term of fludity, because 75Hz isn't really fluent in FPS, mostly for CS2 and Battlefield. So, I'd like to give him a new screen so he can enjoy a little bit more fluidity. On internet, I found a second-hand AOC Q27G2E for 140$, which is cheap for what it is (note that the screen is still under warranty and has been bought 6 months ago, but I can't find it on Amazon). The only problem is, my friend got a GTX 970, making the performances underwhelming on a QHD screen.

Hopefully, I got my birthday recently, and another of my friend bought a RTX 3070 and wants to give me it's RTX 3060 over my current RTX 2060, so performances won't be a very big problem (I overclock my GPU anyway), mostly by the jump from 6GB to 12GB of VRAM. So, I ensure you the performances won't be a problem, and in the worst case, I could always use Lossles Scaling to reduce the load given to the GPU (question of latency, it's better not having to use any kind of scaling).

I should also mention that my ASUS VG279Q1A is a good 165Hz screen (vs. 155Hz for AOC Q27G2E) with a resolution of 1920x1080. It's only flaw is the resolution. For 27 inches, 1920x1080 doesn't look very sharp, but is 1.77x less performance-consuming than QHD. The AOC Q27G2E is incurved (well, incurved or not, this doesn't change me anything), but got 10 less Hz and no ELMB.

So, my question would be, considering I'd give my ASUS VG279Q1A to my friend and take the AOC Q27G2E instead, is this reasonable or should I better keep my screen and look for another screen? Here is the specifications of both screens and my interests and the one of my friend, with it's build (mine is in my signature. Beware about the RTX 2060, remember I'll change it soon with a RTX 3060):

ASUS VG279Q1A:
  • 165 Hz.
  • 1 ms latency.
  • Freesync Premium.
  • ELMB.
  • 1080p
  • 2x HDMI 1.4 + 1x DP 1.2 (I currently use a DisplayPort cable).
AOC Q27G2E:

  • 155 Hz
  • 1 ms latency.
  • FreeSync Premium
  • 1440p
  • 2x HDMI 2.0 + 1x DP 1.2
My interests:

  • I play different FPS games, and older games too: Black Mesa, Half Life 2, Counter-Strike 2, Call Of Duty, Battlefield, etc...
  • I often play at low settings, but I don't hesitate raising the settings in some games.
  • I do personal video editing.
  • I emulate and use virtual machines.
  • I'm looking for frequencies over 100Hz.
  • I need to be able to multi-task propely.
  • I'm experimentated in informatic and know which could be the solutions if I'm facing performances problems.
My friend's interests:

  • Is simply a casual gamer: Plays simpler games.
  • Looks for a compromise between performances and quality.
  • Is a newbie in informatic, can't easily find solutions to performances issues.
My friend's specifications:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 3.6GHz
GPU: MSI Limited Gaming Edition GeForce GTX 970 4GB OC (He got a collector edition!)
RAM: 4x4 G-SKILL 1600MHz Dual Channel
MBD: ASUS H97-PLUS
SSD: Kingston A400 480GB
PSU: FSP Hexa+ 500W 80 Plus (I heard it's not a very good PSU, but not my problem. :/)

If you're missing of any information, feel free to put a message in this topic.

Also, note that the original screen costed 187$, and that both price in shop (Digitec) and on second hand are converted prices. I might also mention that I haven't checked if it's a scam or not (It's not too beautiful to be true, so I'm confident).
