Is there a way to change your character portrait after you've started
the game?

also, when you 'save character', where does that file/info go on the
hard drive?

/NWN/localvault/

You can use Leto to edit a savegame character (it will be in your
savegames folder). If you have HotU, you have the opportunity to
customize your character (change model, portrait, skin color, etc.) when
you start a new module with that saved character.

Alas, that our PR leaves something to be desired. :\

Leto is a character editor, comparable to the GateKeeper / DaleKeeper /
ShadowKeeper series for editing characters in the Baldur's Gate series. It
will edit BIC (standalone) characters, and SAV (savegame) characters. The
current public release is version 3.1.67, and a major revision (version 4)
is due one of these days. (Honest, I'm putting a lot of work into it.)

The download:

The official site (more or less):

http://weathersong.infopop.cc

Feel free to ask me any questions about it.

Cool, thank you. Just one question: is it possible to damage a save file
if you use it?

Short answer: Yes
Longer answer: I've modified dozens of saved games and only one was
damaged. Copy the save game file to a different folder before you do
anything to it.

To emphasize: make a backup, either in case Leto actually does fubar it
(though I've never heard a single report of that happening), or you get
confused by the admittedly confusing interface for saving "Into Package
File" and "Into List from File". 😀

v4 clears up the whole confusing dialog mess, and can also make backups for
you. :}

It's important to put your backup in another directory, too, like Windigo
says. NWN has a habit of deleting files in a savegame folder at
unpredictable intervals. (Though giving it an extension other than SAV also
seems to do the trick. I name mine .sav.bak or .vas.)

Can you delete things from this folder freely, or does NWN use these
files for something else? Is there anything in here that I should leave?

You can pretty much delete anything there.
Every time you make a new character it is saved in there automatically.
Every time you save your character it gets put in there.
I found I had to delete stuff just to try and keep track of what was
where since it doesn't ever seem to overwrite the files, just keeps
adding larger number at the end.

Yeah, I notice there are already three files for my character, even
though I only saved it once, I think. But also, there are a lot of other
files that seem to be for other characters. I don't know what those are,
so I don't want to mess with that.

Mostly those are Bioware pregenerated characters for use by those who
don't want to start by building their own character. (My first time
through NWN I used the BW-built paladin Drax. Worked OK.)

There's a handly Java program here
http://nwvault.ign.com/Files/other/data/1076262874000.shtml
that allows you to manage your characters. You can move them back and
forth between an active (localvault) and inactive (your choice)
directory and you can see the classes/XP/date modified of each character
to help track which is which.

Thanks, I'll look at that.
