I have recently upgrade my computer to have an i7 6700 processor with a new motherboard and RAM. The graphics have also changed to Intel HD Graphics, but I cant change it to my desired GTX 970. Also, Geforce control panel will not open so i cannot change it on there. I am not on expert on these things, but i would like some advice.
Thanks

Okay so you likely have a hardware problem somewhere. Are sure you even getting power to the video card? Are the fans on it spinning? Again, make sure the PCIe power adapters from the power supply are fully inserted into the video card. If so, then try swapping the card to another PCIe port. If you have another video card laying around test your build with that. If it works, then you know your video card is bad. This is exactly how I found out one of my two EVGA 970s in SLI went bad.

Make sure your monitor is plugged into your graphics card, and not your motherboard first. If it doesn't boot, start checking your power connectors to the 970. If you are seeing intel HD graphics, that means your PC is running off the integrated graphics chip included with your CPU.

My computer seems to only work if the lead is in the motherboard. How do I check the power to my graphics card?

Generally if you have a dedicated graphics card installed, the motherboard's BIOS automatically detects it and turns off the onboard CPU graphics. Go into your BIOS and check which VGA output is selected. It should be on "Auto" by default. See if it for some reason kicked over to iGPU (or whatever the integrated graphics option is for your motherboard).

Also, is your video card recognized by Windows in Device Manager under the "Display adapters" drop down tree? And regarding power connectors, depending on your model you need to make sure the PCIe power adapters are firmly in place and the video card fan(s) are spooling up and getting power. What is the *exact* make and model of your GTX 970?

My video card is not recognized on display adapters. Of the exact make and model of my 970, I am not sure.
